Protecting knowledge and technology - a growing challenge for research institutions

Cybersecurity in the research sector is becoming one of the key challenges for the future of states, economies, and technological development. As the role of research and academic institutions continues to grow, the security of research and the protection of knowledge are gaining strategic importance.

Universities and research institutions play a fundamental role in developing new technologies, generating data, and building the competitive advantage of nations. It is within academic environments that innovations emerge-innovations that shape economic growth and influence strategic security.

At the same time, as the importance of the research, development, and innovation (R&D&I) sector increases, so does the level of risk. Universities are increasingly becoming targets of cyberattacks, data theft attempts, and activities aimed at acquiring or exploiting emerging technologies.

Research security - a new approach to protecting science

In this context, the concept of research security is gaining growing importance. It combines the openness of science with responsible risk management, data protection, and control over the flow of knowledge and technology.

The importance of this approach is highlighted in the “Research and Education Security Report,” to which Izabela Albrycht, Director of the AGH Cybersecurity Center, contributed as an author of one of the chapters. In her analysis, she emphasizes that without a well-developed cybersecurity framework, clearly defined procedures, and properly trained personnel, the safe development of innovation is not possible.

From strategy to practice - The SOCCER project

The conclusions presented in the report are reflected in the activities carried out within the SOCCER project, which aims to strengthen cybersecurity in the academic sector.

The project focuses on translating strategic recommendations into practical solutions that can be implemented within universities and research institutions. This includes the development of tools, procedures, and competencies that enable effective risk management and enhance organizational resilience.

Building resilience through awareness and cooperation

Raising awareness and developing common standards in the field of research security are becoming essential elements in strengthening the resilience of the research sector - both in Poland and across Europe.

As knowledge and technology continue to play an increasingly strategic role, ensuring their protection is no longer optional. It is a necessary condition for maintaining innovation, trust, and long-term competitiveness in the global landscape.
